The City of Niles is looking for a carpenter to install an ADA ramp that meets the following criteria: The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) has specific requirements for wheelchair ramps, including: • Width: The clear width of a ramp run should be at least 36 inches between handrails. For commercial or bariatric use, the width should be at least 48 inches. • Slope: The maximum slope for a ramp is 1:12, which means one inch of rise for every foot of length. • Cross slope: The maximum cross slope for a ramp run and landings is 1:48. • Landings: Landings should be at least 60 inches long and the same width as the ramp run. There should be a landing at the top and bottom of the ramp. • Handrails: Handrails should be 34–38 inches high and placed on both sides of the ramp. The clear width between handrails should be at least 36 inches. • Surface: The ramp surface should be slip-resistant and stable. • Edge protection: There should be edge protection to prevent a 4-inch diameter ball from rolling off the ramp. • Resting platforms: Ramps longer than 30 feet should have resting platforms that are 4 ft x 5 ft or 5 ft x 5 ft. • Handrail continuity: Handrails should be continuous the entire length of the run. • Extensions: Extensions should be at least 12 inches long at the top and bottom of the run.
