General Municipal Legal Services: • Advising the City Council, Mayor, advisory boards, and City departments on legal issues related to municipal governance, land use, public records, contracts, employment law, and compliance with local, state, and federal laws. • Drafting and reviewing ordinances, resolutions, contracts, and other legal documents. • Attending City Council meetings and other meetings as necessary. o City Council meetings are regularly scheduled at 7PM on the 1st, 2nd and 4th Tuesday of the month. o Planning Commission meetings are regularly scheduled at 6pm on the 3rd Thursday of the month. o Board of Adjustment meetings are regularly scheduled at 6pm on the 1st Thursday of the month. • Make recommendation to the Mayor, City Council, and departments as it relates to the impacts of new case law, new legislation, and the like. • Representing the City in civil litigation and administrative hearings. • Providing training to City officials and staff on legal matters, including ethics and public records compliance. Prosecution Services: • Prosecuting misdemeanor and gross misdemeanor offenses, traffic infractions, and municipal code violations in the Benton County District Court (Prosser Courtroom, Benton County Courthouse. Court hearings are currently scheduled for: Second and Fourth Tuesdays at 1:00 p.m. and Third Thursdays at 1:00 p.m. Jury Trials are set for Mondays at 8:30 a.m. • Advising law enforcement officers on legal matters related to investigations and enforcement actions. • Representing the City in appeals related to criminal matters. • Negotiating plea agreements and working collaboratively with the courts, public defenders, and other justice system stakeholders. • Providing semi-annual legal updates to officers.
