1. Shoulder Improvement a. The desired width of the improved shoulder is five (5) feet, but may have to be reduced to four (4) feet in some areas due to the location of an adjacent waterway, utility poles, etc. b. The final layout of the shoulder will be confirmed with the DPW Director prior to beginning work. c. Approximately 12 inches of fill will be removed within the proposed shoulder limits by the contractor. d. Once the excavation has been completed, a synthetic fabric (non-woven geotextile) will be installed to separate the native backfill from the gravel backfill material. At least a two-foot overlap of the geotextile will be required. e. Approximately 8 inches of VTrans 704.05A (4-inch minus) subbase crushed gravel, fine graded or similar should be placed on the geotextile. f.
