The Georgia Department of Corrections (GDC) has been operating a Braille program since 2002 and the operation moved to Central State Prison in 2011. The GDC provides accessible textbooks and other materials for visually impaired individuals. Offenders in the Braille Program at Central State Prison, the Georgia Braille Transcribers (GBT), assist by producing braille, digital text, and braille writer repair. Each of the offenders in the Braille Programs are consistently working to receive braille and On-The-Job (OJT) certifications. Currently there is a maximum of 24 participants in the Braille Program. Appendix A (Production Data Overview) captures data for FY22 – FY24. The mission of Georgia Braille Transcribers is to assist men through the Braille Transcriber certification process so they may become highly trained individuals. Once certified our goal is to produce the highest quality Braille products available in the marketplace. By doing so we will provide the blind community with the tools they need to reach their highest potentials. Through the process our transcribers gain the skills need to succeed in prison but more importantly we provide them with the knowledge and positive mindset that places them in a position to be highly successful upon their release. This solicitation seeks to find a braille program coordinator to oversee the braille operations according to the requirements listed below.
