Project 1: Chestnut Street In the 1970’s a storm sewer was constructed from the banks of the Barren River beneath Chestnut Street to near the intersection with Fifth Street. A section of the system constructed of 53”x83” concrete elliptical pipe and approximately 900’ in length was installed sloping in the wrong direction. This resulted in a low point in the system near Fourth Street. To ameliorate the issue, the City worked with the contractor to install a pump station at Fourth and Chestnut to dewater the system. However, the pump does not remove accumulated debris and the system has silted in to the break over point resulting in roughly a 67% occlusion of the cross section of the pipe. It is anticipated that the deficient portion of this system will be fully replaced. This project is grant funded and the successful respondent will demonstrate knowledge and experience in ensuring the requirements of the funding are met, including wage requirements. Project 2: Elm Street This section of Whiskey Run, serving 27 acres, was originally an open and unlined ditch with stacked stone sides that was later enclosed by placing reinforced concrete slabs with I-beam supports across the ditch to create an approximately 8’ wide by 4’ high by 35’ long chamber. In an area directly beneath Elm Street, it has been observed that the I-beam supports have almost completely rusted away, spalling from the slab has exposed the rebar supports, the stacked stone sides are severely undercut, and a sanitary sewer main crosses the storm sewer less than 1’ off its bottom causing accumulation of debris and aggravating scouring. It is anticipated that this section will need to be completely reconstructed to support Elm Street and provide drainage. Additional repairs immediately up and down stream may also be needed.
