The 9192 Crescent Drive Bulkhead project site is located in the Laurel Canyon area of Los Angeles, approximately 1.1 miles southwest of the intersection of Lookout Mountain Avenue and Laurel Canyon Boulevard. At the project site, two erosion gullies have developed on the upper portion of the slope that borders the southeast side of Crescent Drive. The erosion gullies have resulted in the creation of 3- to 5-foot high near-vertical scarps adjacent to the roadway. In addition, the erosion gullies have also narrowed the usable width of the road to approximately 8.5 feet. These conditions have created a threat to public safety. This project will mitigate the threat to public safety and restore lateral support to the Crescent Drive by constructing two new retaining structures along the southeast side of the road. The new retaining structures include 1) a cantilever bulkhead and, 2) a pipe and board retaining structure. The bulkhead and pipe and board retaining structures will be approximately 32 feet and 15 feet in length, respectively. The bulkhead will be constructed with cast-in-drilled-hole (CIDH) piles with steel wide flange beams and pre-cast concrete lagging. The pipe and board structure will also include CIDH piles with steel pipes and timber lagging. The project also includes installation of new AC pavement, AC curb, and metal beam guardrail.
