Specifications include, but are not limited to: The existing tunnel system needs to be demolished and rebuilt while steam service to existing customers remains in-tact. The design and construction shall be installed as per the University’s Underground Steam System guidelines. Any variances shall be requested and approved by the University in writing. The specified tunnel system is comprised of a pair of twin tunnels adjoining each other and running approximately 1,500 feet between end points (3,000 feet of tunnel) with associated expansion loops and eight vaults. Vaults 059, 060, 061, and 067 have already been replaced and will be retained, but piping within will be replaced and modified as needed. Tunnel sections between vaults 061 and 067 have already been replaced and will be retained. The twin tunnel system will be replaced with a singular tunnel in the same location. This work will consist of DOT encroachment permits, traffic control, erosion control, and submittals with the State Construction Office and University stakeholders. This work will include flexibility to handle pedestrian traffic and allowing uninterrupted access for UNC and UNC Healthcare business activities.
