The Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF), in collaboration with the FAA, is initiating a safety and security enhancement project at the Benny Benson Kodiak Airport. The project focuses on updates that address 49 CFR 1542 requirements. The work includes the replacement of fencing and manual swing gates, and installing new culvert security screens, fence skirting, guardrail, a new Access Control System (ACS), a new wireless network tower, electrically locked pedestrian gates, and powered vehicle gates. Portions of the work involve excavating soils that contain Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and Petroleum (POL) contaminants, which will require special handling procedures in accordance with an Environmental Management Plan (EMP).
