Individuals with intellectual disabilities are, as reported by many studies, at a much higher risk of all types of abuse than the general population. People with intellectual disabilities are more vulnerable due to a variety of factors including exposure to many care takers, being encouraged to comply, and being misperceived as poor reporters. The Department of Developmental Services (DDS or the Department) takes a zero-tolerance approach to all types of abuse. With training, individuals supported by the Department can learn ways to advocate for themselves and prevent abuse from happening. It is our goal to provide training to individuals and staff as well as align the culture within provider agencies so that abuse is reduced to the greatest extent possible.
