Specifications include, but are not limited to: 1.0 ASSESSMENT AND REPLACEMENT The selected contractor must ensure that the appropriate quantity and type of detector is installed in each unit. To accomplish this, they must: • verify that any detector that has been previously installed in the unit is a photoelectric smoke detector with a sealed battery/ carbon monoxide detector and immediately replace the detectors that do not meet this requirement • ensure that all smoke detectors/ carbon monoxide detectors are installed properly and securely • ensure that the smoke detector/ carbon monoxide detectors are installed in the proper locations as outlined below. PHOTOELECTRIC SMOKE DETECTORS I. LOCATION OF PHOTOELECTRIC DETECTOR WITH A YEAR BATTERY The contractor must place the photoelectric detectors with a sealed battery in the following areas: • outside of each separate sleeping area in the immediate vicinity of the sleeping areas in each living unit. • each detector must be audible in each adjacent, separate sleeping area in the unit when all intervening doors are closed and all household equipment that may be in operation at night are in full operation. • detector must be on each story/level including all sleeping areas (bedrooms), including basements or cellars but excluding crawl spaces and unfinished attics. • detector must be in the immediate vicinity of the sleeping areas in each living unit • Within 21 feet of any door to a bedroom measured along a path of travel; • Where a smoke detector installed outside a bedroom is separated from an adjacent living area by a door, a smoke detector must also be installed on the living area side of the door.
