Specifications include, but are not limited to: MROI is currently assembling its second Unit Telescope. There a few steps needed to complete this work. That includes lifting the Telescope Enclosure to complete some work on the underside of it and moving the Unit Telescope from its current location to the telescope array. The site is located in Magdalena Mountains near South Baldy Peak, approximately 30 miles from Socorro, NM. Below is a description of the work involved: Finish UT2 floor assembly: 1-2 days. Will require lifting the telescope enclosure and setting on some stands to allow for work underneath the enclosure. Enclosure and lifting frame weigh about 42,000 lbs. See picture below of the enclosure sitting on the stands. Move UT2 to array: 1-2 days. Will require lifting fully assembled UT and mounting on a transporter to move to the array. The distance needed to travel is about 1,400 ft partially down a 10% grade. The UT will then need to be set on a concrete pad on the array. The fully assembled UT weighs about 76,000 lbs. The UT also needs to be kept level while moving to the array. For the first Unit Telescope a Faymonville Powermax was used to transport it to the array. The jig used to assemble the enclosure was used to mount the Unit Telescope on the transporter. See pictures below for the previous transport setup and of the route.
