The Respondent shall accomplish, but is not limited to, the following tasks: Assessment of AZMNH NAGPRA eligible collections: The Respondent will conduct an assessment of the AZMNH collections and identify human remains, faunal remains, and objects that are eligible for repatriation under NAGPRA regulations. Development of a NAGPRA program for repatriations: The Respondent shall develop a plan and/or project(s) to conduct timely and respectful consultation and repatriation of AZMNH NAGPRA collections. This task requires the following elements but is not limited to: Organization of the AZMNH NAGPRA eligible collections into a general project or multiple projects for repatriation. Development of a protocol and timeline for the project or projects including all necessary steps outlined in the new NAGPRA regulations. Implementation of NAGPRA protocols: The Respondent shall coordinate and implement the stages of the NAGPRA protocols for the repatriation of human remains and associated funerary objects, and repatriation of other cultural items and shall ensure that AZMNH is compliant with all aspects of NAGPRA. This includes, but is not limited to: Compile itemized lists and/or summaries, Background/archival research on NAGPRA-eligible items in the AZMNH collections, Research excavation and curation history of the sites associated with the project. Associate objects with human remains and/or identify unassociated funerary objects, Document chronology and information relevant to cultural affiliation. Initiate consultations with potential claimants, Respond to any consulting parties and/or requests and make a record of consultations, Complete inventories, Submit NAGPRA inventories and summaries, Draft NAGPRA Notices and publication in the Federal Register, Receive and acknowledge claims, Respond to requests, Complete legal transfer of control, Carry out any research requested during consultation, Consult with claimants on the physical transfer of custody, Repatriation of collections. Curation of Collections: The Respondent in collaboration with the AZMNH anthropology department will develop and implement procedures for the care, management, and storage of the AZMNH NAGPRA collections according to the federal law’s new regulations. Engagement in Tribal Collaborations: In their role of NAGPRA repatriation coordinator for AZMNH, the consultant will demonstrate the museum’s commitment to a proactive effort to both meet our obligations under the federal law and also to continue to build respectful, long-lasting, and meaningful relationships with tribal partners. This task includes but is not limited to: Development of relationships that acknowledge and respect Tribes' sovereignty, cultural protocols, and cultural and religious practices and knowledge, Maintenance of timely and respectful communication with tribal partners through in-person or virtual meetings, email, digital or physical documents, and phone calls to coordinate compliance.
