Please note: This is a Sole Source Notification. Specifications include, but are not limited to: Due to the restrictions on out-of-state hiring by the State of Utah, student labor is needed in College Park, Maryland to operate a custom UGS-developed aerial film digitization station as part of our Geologic Data Preservation Projects. As digitizing legacy, historical aerial film is a specialized process that very few people have worked with, using students from the Department of Geology at the University of Maryland who use aerial imagery in their coursework and are located nearby to the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) Archives II facility is the best option for the UGS to complete our work associated with a current federal grant and future federal grant (if funded, but expected). Tasks include working with NARA to request aerial rolls before they are needed, digitizing these aerial rolls using the UGS-developed digitization station, running a custom Python script to process the raw digital images to final TIF and preview JPEG images overnight, transferring image and data files to hard drives and shipping to the UGS, maintaining a record of digitization and problems encountered, and coordinating with the UGS as digitization proceeds. This work will provide one or more geology students with valuable work experience to complement their academic studies. Many geology students use Python for data analysis and that experience will also be valuable if problems arise with overnight image processing.
