Specifications include, but are not limited to: The city is seeking creative design examples from the proposing firms that will incorporate the following base-level design requirements for the gateway signs: The sign shall be attractive and exhibit a professional quality, which will reflect positively on the City of Tempe. The City’s name shall be incorporated in a visually appealing way into the sign and be predominantly displayed on the face of the signs. Signage shall incorporate City of Tempe’s branding standards, as appropriate. Signage shall leverage the spatial organization of the location where it will be installed and utilize architectural design features, shape, color, lighting, etc. Historic properties and new contemporary architecture define Mill Avenue and shall be considered in the design to compliment these adjacent structures. Signage and imagery shall be easy to recognize, clear, distinctive, and easy to read. Signage shall be compliant with ADA Standards for Accessible Design. Signage shall be compliant with all City of Tempe sign ordinances. • The signs shall be static with fixed content and appropriate lighting for both sides of the sign. • Signage shall be composed of materials that are durable for the projected lifespan while withstanding severe weather conditions including strong monsoon winds and extreme heat and intense sunlight. • Designs shall consider sustainable materials and construction and integrate with downtown Tempe’s design character. • Signage shall not obscure or interfere with traffic control devices and shall meet all structural and traffic engineering requirements. • Signage shall not adversely affect existing structures, drainage patterns or stormwater runoff quality. • Signage shall not include glaring surface finishes. • Signage shall not restrict site distance for motorized traffic or pedestrians crossing the street/crosswalk. • Selected firm will work with the City to refine the final proposed design before presentation to the City Council for approval, if necessary. • Additional approval may also be required by the Downtown Tempe Authority which represents the numerous businesses located on Mill Avenue and surrounding area.
