The APS Special Education Department needs to provide ongoing training for teachers and other support personnel who need to deal with crisis situations among students with disabilities. The training also needs to include prevention strategies for staff to use. The training will be provided through a train-the-trainer model which should include periodic refresher work for the APS trainers. Finally, the training must incorporate not only restraint research but also NM regulatory guidelines, statutes and rules. Albuquerque Public Schools is accepting bids for de-escalation training and related materials. APS is accepting requests for proposals for training that is person-centered focus that complies with restraint reductions standards. The training should integrate trauma-informed care initiatives.
