1. Influent Capture: The existing influent system consists of a Hycore Helisieve rotary screen, after which the wastewater runs through a diversion chamber and thence into the pre-reaction basins. As no appropriate location is available upstream, the Ketchikan Gateway Borough Vactor Truck discharges wastewater and mixedsolids into the diversion chamber. Significant solids contribute to build-up in the channels between the pre-react and aeration basins. CRW identified a mechanical sieve as a vactor waste intake; the design team will identify the vactor waste intake, either mechanical or manual, into which untreated water and debris may be deposited and eliminated prior to entering the treatment system. 2. Influent Discharge Piping: Existing influent piping discharges some three feet above the high level surface of the pre-react basin, resulting in aerosolization of the influent and odor emissions into the surrounding neighborhoods. CRW recommended extending the influent lines to discharge below the water surface of the pre-react basin. Design will be required to determine the head pressure necessary to ensure discharges under normal and storm conditions. 3. Process Instrumentation: Install process instrumentation to capture water conditions in the basins, including DO and pH monitors in the basins, with information readings integrated into the SCADA system to establish trending records. Instrumentation will also include influent flow metering integrated with SCADA. 4. UV Disinfection: Existing disinfection is accomplished through the application of chlorine tablets in the equalization basin, followed by tablet dichlorination in the disinfection basin. This leads to high fecal coliform counts during storm events, and high effluent chlorine readings during other periods. CRW recommended new UV Disinfection to provide controlled disinfection to the system. 5. Electrical Upgrades: This scope includes upgrades to the conduit runs and replacement of corroded and failed conduit runs serving lights around the basins. This work will also include controls upgrades to improve operator access to light switches.
