Specifications include, but are not limited to: provide Heavy Equipment Safety Training for employees with no experience up to multiple years of operating experience. Heavy equipment is important to SCDOT for maintaining and improving facilities, landscaping, and grounds within the state of South Carolina. Training for heavy equipment, include but are not limited to, large excavator, large excavator with attachment for grinding trees, mini excavator, tractors, backhoe, skid steer type mini loader, front end loader, motor grader, bull dozer, tractor, tractor with mower, large and small roller. There are numerous opportunities for injuries and property damage to occur during the operation of this machinery due to their sheer size and power, operating locations adjacent to easily damaged equipment or installed utilities and other potential hazards. Unsafe practices by either the operator of the equipment or those around the equipment can create very dangerous situations. Serious injuries can occur if the equipment strikes a worker or if the equipment is rolled over or other hazardous events occur. - Training will consist of up to 4 hours in class instruction with written test as well as up to 4 hours hands on training/assessment. - Class size is to be no more than 6 persons. - Training (in-person) to be conducted at SCDOT facility of choice throughout the state of South Carolina (See attachment A), using SCDOT heavy equipment of choice (SCDOT will provide equipment for training). - Training shall consist of a combination of pre-use inspection, formal instruction, practical training, practical evaluation of the operator’s performance in the workplace and post-use inspection. Safety/Practical Operator training shall be conducted by persons who have the knowledge, training, and experience to train heavy equipment operators.
