Specifications include, but are not limited to: 1. The Resident Bridge Engineer along with the District Bridge Inspection Team Leader (or designee) shall clearly mark all areas for repair on the bridge deck. If it is realized that at any time during the course of the project that the quantities set up on the contract could be exceeded, contractor must notify SCDOT representative immediately. Contractor shall not perform work in excess of contract quantity unless directed by SCDOT. 2. For partial-depth patching, remove the damaged area to sound concrete with squared edges in all directions. Clean the area to repaired by high-pressure water blasting, or other approved methods. Remove all loose particles, dirt, deteriorated concrete, or other substances that would impair the bond of the repair material. Follow this with a highpressure air blast for final cleaning. Bottom of partial patch area to be at least one inch below the bottom of the rebar in the top mat of rebar. Surface of the existing concrete in a saturated surface-dry (SSD) condition is acceptable but remove all free (ponded) water just before placing material. 3. If the reinforcing steel shows some corrosion but is still in sound condition coat with corrosion inhibiter/bonding agent (Sika ® Armatec ® 1C or SCDOT approved equal). Otherwise, replace reinforcing steel as necessary with Grade 60 ksi minimum with a minimum lap splice of 2’-0” same size/pattern as installed in original deck. This may require a larger patch area with pay item quantity adjustment. 4. Apply a moisture insensitive bonding agent to the vertical and horizontal faces of the patch before placing concrete patching material. (Sika ® Armatec ® 1C or SCDOT approved equal). 5. Use a high strength/early set concrete mix of 4ksi minimum with a cure time for traffic loading within 6 hours (90% rated compressive strength). The aggregate used shall be of such size to flow below the top mat of reinforcing steel while still providing the necessary compressive strength. Place the repair material on the prepared surfaces. Consolidate using immersion-type vibrators or other methods acceptable to the Engineer. Contractor shall notify SCDOT representative at least 24 hours prior to any concrete placement. Test cylinders will be obtained by SCDOT personnel. 6. The top surface of the patch shall be flush with the existing deck surface on all sides. Apply a SCDOT approved epoxy deck sealer 6 inches either side of the perimeter of the concrete cut line (top surface only) after the patch is cured for traffic loading. This shall be performed within a month after the patching has been completed. The cost for the sealant is incidental to the partial depth patching. 7. Traffic Control for lane closures per SCDOT Standard Drawings. Contractor must notify Resident Bridge Engineer at least 3 days prior to closing any lanes. Care must be taken to minimize traffic backing up to the nearby intersection of US 221. Payment will be at the contract unit price per day that lanes closures are utilized. 8. Work scheduling/communication protocol will be coordinated by the District Bridge Representative. 9. Ensure that concrete for partial depth patching is Class 4000 Concrete conforming to the requirements of applicable subsections of Section 701 of the SCDOT Standard Specifications. 10. Payment for Partial Depth Bridge Deck Patching will be at the Contract unit price per square yard. Payment is full compensation for sawing, removal of bridge deck concrete, preparing patch area, furnishing and placing patch material, finishing and applying sealant, and restoration of the area.
