Specifications include, but are not limited to: LIQUID SODIUM HYDROXIDE (NaOH) is a clear, caustic, corrosive, aqueous solution. The specific gravity of the solution shall be in the range of 1.51 to 1.54. Specific gravity will vary with NaOH concentration. NaOH shall contain a minimum of 48% NaOH by weight. The material supplied under these specifications shall contain no mineral or organic substances in quantities capable of producing deleterious or injurious effect upon the health of those consuming the water which has been properly treated with NaOH. In all respects the NaOH shall meet as a minimum the current American National Standards Institute/National Sanitation Foundation (ANSI/NSF) Stand 60. In addition, the standard specifications of the American Water Works Association Standard B501-03 and the current Water Chemicals Codes (as published by the National Academy of Sciences), whichever is the more restrictive specification, unless otherwise specified in the specifications for material used in the purification of municipal potable water supplies. Typical chemical composition/purity requirements are as follows: 50% Sodium Hydroxide - minimum 48% by weight Total Alkali (Na20) - minimum 37% by weight NaCl - minimum < 2% by weight Fe - minimum <10 ppm. During the months of November through March, 25% LIQUID SODIUM HYDROXIDE may be ordered. The specific gravity of the solution shall be in the range of 1.28 to 1.30. In all respects, the 25% LIQUID SODIUM HYDROXIDE shall meet the AWWA Standard B501-03. The typical chemical composition/purity requirements are as follows: 25% Sodium Hydroxide - 24 - 26% by weight Total Alkali (Na2O) - minimum 18.5% by weight NaCl - minimum <1% by weight Fe - minimum <10 ppm
