Specifications include, but are not limited to: 1) Spring coil wire: a. Thickness: i. Minimum: 15 gauge ii. Maximum: 13.5 gauge b. High carbon and hard drawn steel spring wire c. Must be of coiling and knotting quality d. Hourglass shape e. Minimum height: 5 inches f. Contains a minimum of five (5) active turns per coil g. Must be knotted at both ends h. Must be tempered to meet the Coil Compression Test as follows: The decrease in height must not exceed l/8 inches after the coil has been compressed 60% of the height of the coil for 20 times. 2) Coils: the number of required coils are provided for each line item below. 3) Helical ties: a. Must be tempered b. Must be made of high carbon steel lacing wire as follows: i. Diameter Minimum: 0.0475 inches ii. Thickness Minimum: 17.5 gauge c. The ends must be turned to form a smooth, rounded termination 4) Border wire: a. Thickness minimum: 9 gauge b. Must be one-piece high carbon and upholstery steel wire c. Must have a corner radius of 2.5 inches (+/- .5 inches) d. Must be formed in a size to frame the coil units e. The ends must be secured with a minimum 18-gauge steel ferrule 3 inches in length (+/- .5 inches) or must be butt welded or mechanically twisted. 5) Fabrication and Construction: a. The coils must be joined together on both surfaces, at right angles to the long axis, by use of the tempered helical. b. Must be assembled in such a manner that a minimum of three (3) convolutions capture each coil. c. Must be securely fastened at each end to prevent lateral slippage. d. The coil units must be framed with the border wire and securely attached to both tops and bottoms of coils by tempered helical. e. The border helical must be assembled to the full perimeter of each border wire and must capture the coil edges with a minimum of three (3) turns per coil. f. The ends of the helical must be bent and locked to hold fast. g. All knots must be turned down, and the ends of all helical must be turned inward to form smooth and rounded terminations.
