Specifications include, but are not limited to: 1) The agricultural contract will include the following fields shown on the attached Byron Walker Wildlife Area map: (See attached). 2) Agricultural activities on these lands are very detailed and will be described each year by the Annual Permit (2024/2025 Annual Permit shown on following pages). Annual Permits will be reviewed and signed each year prior to any field activities. Permittees must be aware that the primary purpose for these agricultural services is to enhance wildlife habitat and may differ from those in the private sector. A typical 4-year crop rotation will be: 1) wheat>cover crop, 2) milo 3) millet or forage sorghum (seed bearing) mixed with cowpeas or mung beans, 4) oats(spring), barley, or triticale>wheat planting. The millet/forage sorghum/cowpea and oats/barley/triticale crops can be baled for hay. All bales must be removed from the area within 20 days. All terraces will be mold board plowed up prior to any other field activity in the summer/fall of 2023. 3) Competitive bidding for this contract will be based on an annual cash rental rate per acre. Rental rate will be the same for all acres. Rental payment is due on or before April 1 each year. 4) The initial term of this contract will be for 5 crop years (from the date of award to December 31, 2028). The original cash rent rate will be used for each year with no further bidding required. The successful bidder may plant a cover crop into the wheat stubble from the 2023 wheat that remains in field 1 if time allows. Field 2 will be planted (no till) to wheat in the fall of 2023. The remaining 2 fields will be planted to succeeding crops from the rotation in the spring/summer of 2024. Cover crop seed will be paid for by the state and planted by the permittee. Alternative cover crop options may be considered with manager’s approval. 5) Sub-permitting of Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks agricultural land is strictly prohibited.
