Specifications include, but are not limited to: Within the Department of Agronomy at Iowa State University, the Geospatial Laboratory for Soil Informatics generates spatial data (maps) that are useful to other researchers and the public. These maps come in both raster and vector formats, but not all users have the experience with GIS software that allows them to utilize these maps in a digital format. To make these maps more accessible, we are seeking an online map interface that will enable users to navigate the maps, turn layers on/off, and click to obtain information about specific locations on the map. Once developed, we will have multiple map sets that will be of interest to different audiences. For example, we have map sets that extend across the central region of the USA, across the state of Iowa, and some focused on research fields. Because of the different scopes of these map sets, we anticipate multiple sites that use the same interface infrastructure but with different map layer content. Audiences could be wide ranging. However, they will typically be those not familiar with GIS, although they will have likely interacted with Google Maps style interfaces.
