Specifications include, but are not limited to: The Town of Hartford and its Historic Preservation Commission (HHPC) are pursuing National Register Historic District Nomination(s) for the Taft’s Flat residential area in White River Junction, Vermont (WRJ), a plateau between Downtown White River Junction and Wilder Village. Taft’s Flat got its name from the Orrin Taft Farm that existed on the plateau. Prior to 1900, there was very little development on Taft’s Flat. For the next seventy-five years, five residential subdivisions of varying sizes were developed. See Attachment #1 (map of the area). An Intensive Level Survey (ILS), “A Survey of Five Taft’s Flat Neighborhoods” was completed in 2021. See Attachment #2. According to the Taft’s Flat ILS, “there are no properties listed on the National Register of Historic Places or the State Register of Historic Places in the area surveyed. This survey found several potential districts and individually eligible properties.”
