Specifications include, but are not limited to: This is a Division of Wildlife Resources (DWR) project, funded by the Watershed Restoration Initiative (WRI) in partnership with SITLA and BLM. This project is focused on completing archaeological surveys in advance of future vegetation management and fire risk management projects in the Winter Ridge area. Eventual project goals for the vegetation management aspects of the project include: Increased forage for wildlife and livestock through conifer removal. Provide better access to water for local terrestrial wildlife. Increase the health of upland areas within the Willow Creek watershed. Reduce catastrophic wildland fire risk through the creation of a landscape vegetation mosaic. Eventual vegetation management treatments will be completed by bullhog to remove conifers. More information on potential treatments can be shared if needed. Any NRHP eligible site identified through this survey effort will be avoided by mechanical treatments or treated in a method that will not cause an adverse effect. Any vegetation treatments in affected areas will not occur until summer 2024. The project area totals approximately 1,496 acres primarily on SITLA lands in Grand County split between approximately 25 individual polygons. A small portion of BLM and private lands are involved. Given the project is occurring both on SITLA and BLM lands and funded with state monies, this project qualifies as both a state and federal undertaking. The survey, reporting, and SHPO/tribal consultation will be completed under state and federal cultural resource regulations and standards. More information on the project needs, objectives and management plans can be found here. A few photographs of the general project area can be found here that show typical vegetation.
