Prefabricated Timber Crossing Panels for 11 rail crossings. Prefabricated panels are required for Maintenance-of-Way personnel to replace cross-ties under the rail crossings. The cross-ties hold the track in gauge (56-1/2 inches). Panels must be fit for 100-lb RE rail placed on 10-ft cross-ties.
Prefabricated Timber Crossing Pannels should be full depth creosote-treated hardwood timber crossing panels used in railroad crossings. The timber panels layover the rail and ties to let passenger vehicles cross. The panels require detailed cuts, notching, beveling, and drilling to perfectly fit inside the rail gauge and outside on the rail field side. The timbers shall be primarily oak and with some mixed hardwoods allowed.
The standard creosote retention for railroad timbers is 7 pounds per cubic foot (pcf) for oak, hickory, or mixed hardwoods. Creosote protects against decay fungi and insects, and restores the wood's natural elasticity.
