Specifications include, but are not limited to: Located east of Manti and Sterling in Sanpete County, the project is a partnership between the Manti-La Sal National Forest (Forest) and the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources (DWR). The project is focused on restoration of big game summer ranges which have become degraded from conifer encroachment and the loss of aspen and understory vegetation. The conifer encroachment is largely a result of a century of fire suppression in the area. As the conifer trees continue to grow, without removal from fire or mechanical means, they outcompete aspen and other understory vegetation that is critical for big game. The project’s goal is to increase the diversity of plant communities in this area, with will in turn create a diversity of animal species. Beyond improving vegetation diversity, reducing conifer stands will help reduce the risk of catastrophic fires, vegetation disease, and post-fire mudslides that can contaminate water. This area is one of the two highest priority summer restoration areas for the Forest and DWR with other nearby areas in line. Actual conifer treatments for this area are not yet assigned but will likely include a mixture of prescribed fire and mechanical methods of removing conifer trees. This cultural resources survey and assessment will contribute to a NEPA analysis being completed by the Forest and allow important vegetation management projects to occur in the future.
