Specifications include, but are not limited to: Montana State University (MSU) has a US Army contract to develop a specialty carbon composite/epoxy prepreg at a pilot plant level (TRL 6). A key step in that process is the production of highly accurate thermoset hot melt epoxy resin. The process selected for this manufacture is reverse/forward roll film coating. Requirements: Application: Coating of thermoset hot melt epoxy resin on a release coated paper. Operation: Reverse roll coating. Coating thickness: 30 +/- 3 grams per square meter (0.001 +/- 0.0001 inches) nominal. Width: 14” to 24” roll face. Pass Line: 48” Temperature: 350F (177C) maximum Applicator and Metering Rolls, 50F (10C) minimum Backing Roll and Chill Plates. Line Speed: 3 to 30 FPM. Substrate: Dual coated silicon coated 60# or 80# paper wound on 3” ID cardboard core, 17” maximum OD. Applicator and Metering Roll: Hard chrome coated, drilled and tapped for thermal fluid, ground TIR at 0.0002”, mounted in high precision bearings, capable of holding 1F (0.8C) across the roll face.
