Specifications include, but are not limited to: Surveys shall occur at a minimum of 10 reaches (i.e., primary survey locales) in Illinois streams. Reach locales are identified in the attachment and reach boundaries shall be provided to the contractor as GPS coordinates after contract is awarded. All reaches are located within a reasonable distance from boat ramps or foot access points. Mussel may be sampled using wading techniques, diving, or a combination of the two. Search methods include qualitative (i.e., timed) and semi-quantitative (transects). All live mussels shall be collected. Dead shells representing each encountered species (live or dead) shall be collected. Detailed search method requirements and site characteristics are provided in the attachment. Mussels collected during each search hour or each transect shall be held in separate bags and the hour or transect in which an individual mussel was collected shall be recorded. Scientific name, common name, length, and growth ring count for all live mussels shall be recorded. Photos of identifying features (e.g., valve, umbo, pigmentation) taken from at least one individual of each species collected will serve to verify species identification and shall be provided to IDNR. Representative photos of each survey reach shall be provided. All live native mussels must be returned to their survey reach of origin immediately upon conclusion of individual measurement and photography (specifications 1.3.3 - 1.3.5).
