The goal of the contract is to reduce the amount of garbage multi-family residents send to the landfill. The 2020 Residential Waste and Recycling Composition Study found that nearly 60% of the materials that multifamily residents put in the garbage are recyclable or compostable, which is not allowed per City regulation. In addition, 20% of the landfill-bound material is food waste, which produces methane, a powerful global warming greenhouse gas.
