Specifications include, but are not limited to: The Roadside Environmental Design Section received funding from the State Maintenance Bureau for green infrastructure maintenance throughout the state. Animal detection systems along wildlife corridors, green stormwater infrastructure (such as bioswales and stormwater retention basins), and creation and protection of pollinator habitat are key components of the green infrastructure maintenance program. While planning for the program, the Roadside Environmental Design Section, in coordination with NMDOT’s wildlife coordinator, observed that wildlife crossings, potential pollinator habitat, and riparian/wetland areas where installation of green stormwater infrastructure would be most beneficial, are commonly found in the same areas. The team believes that identifying the 50 best places in New Mexico to add green infrastructure projects to help address climate change issues within NMDOT right-of-way will help the Environmental Bureau identify the areas where projects will have the most beneficial impact and will help NMDOT secure potential project funding. Project locations can be prioritized using GIS analysis.
