Specifications include, but are not limited to: The South Dakota Department of Social Services (DSS) has daily interactions with citizens of South Dakota for whom English is not their first language These services are provided in-person, via video calls, and phone calls. Some of these interactions are scheduled, but many happen ad hoc when a person calls or walks into one of our offices. People seeking our services have moved to South Dakota from a number of countries. Thus, we have clients whose native languages are Spanish, Sudanese, and Mandarin just to name a few. In addition, we serve individuals who communicate using American Sign Language. One critical part of Department of Social Services is the Humans Services Center (HSC) in Yankton, South Dakota. This facility provides in-patient mental health and substance use treatment and require interpreters in languages such as Karen, American Sign Language, Spanish, Mandarin, and Sudanese.
