Specifications include, but are not limited to: The West Virginia Department of Transportation, Division of Highways, has proposed to replace existing Pocatalico River Road Truss Bridge with a one-lane wide single-spanbridge along WV County Route 34 over the Pocatalico River in Roane County, WV. The new bridge will replace an existing single lane, single span steel through truss bridge that is in poor condition. The total length of the project is 490 feet and the length of the bridge is 145 feet (c/c). The out-to-out bridge width will be 17’-6” and will be constructed using three lines of steel girders. The two abutments will be made of reinforced concrete founded on steel bearing piles which extend to rock. Both abutment toes and foundation protections near Abutments 1 and 2 are above Ordinary High Water (OHW) elevation. The proposed bridge will be constructed downstream of the existing bridge, which will remain open until construction of the new bridge is complete. The superstructure can be erected from several different locations on the job site (downstreamof Abutment 2 utilizing a crane pad, behind the abutments) depending on what is easiest during construction. Due to the length of the bridge and limited access to the bridge location, one or two field splices will be utilized so the girders may be more easily delivered to the site. A temporary partial causeway will be utilized during construction to facilitate the removal of the existing bridge. A 45’ X 50’ crane pad is also provided on the downstream end of the proposed abutment 2 for the erection of new girders. Once the proposed bridge is completed and opened to traffic, the existing bridge shall be demolished and removed by the contractor as per the WVDOH’s request. The existing truss shall be lowered, disassembled, and hauled away. Existing Abutment 1 will be removed down to an elevation of 676’, and the remaining part of the abutment will remain in place to maintain stability of the embankment. Existing Abutment 2 will be removed to 2’ below existing grade. Material from the dismantled structures shall become the property of the contractor and shall be removed from the right of way and disposed of properly. The construction of the bridge is planned to take less than one year, therefore the temporary causeway and crane pad will be in place less than one year. Temporary fill will be removed when construction is complete. To protect the stream during temporary fill construction/removal and bridge demolition, any material that enters the stream will be removed by the contractor.
