Specifications include, but are not limited to: The Department of Natural Resources (DNR), Division of Forestry (DOF) is requesting information on the availability and capability of Alaskan contractors with interest to provide hazard fuel mitigation and/or fuel break installation to protect our communities across Alaska. Identified projects will either be shaded fuel breaks or mechanical treatments. Shaded fuels breaks are accomplished through hand treatment by removing targeted trees, ultimately thinning out the planned area and creating a shaded fuel break that can be utilized for fire suppression options in the defense of life and property. Mechanical treatments are often accomplished through heavy equipment such as shear blades, roller choppers, excavators, feller bunchers, masticators, etc., often similar to right of way clearing. Fuel breaks provide fire suppression options through the implementation of the site prescriptions that are intended to protect property and provide for firefighter safety. Mechanical treatments frequently include complete removal of hazard fuel within the prescribed area, typically treating a larger area than shaded fuel breaks.; DOF is currently planning multiple fuel mitigation projects throughout the State. Current areas with proposed projects include Fairbanks, Tok, Delta, Glennallen, Wasilla, Houston, Willow, and Soldotna. The planned projects will be either shaded fuel breaks, mechanical treatments, or a combination of both.
