Specifications include, but are not limited to: The Build Back Better Regional Challenge (BBBRC) is the Economic Development Administration’s (EDA) $1 billion program to boost economic recovery and rebuild American communities in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, including communities grappling with decades of disinvestment. In Phase 1 of the BBBRC, The Kentucky Digital Health and (Artificial Intelligence) AI Coalition (Coalition) was selected as one of sixty (60) finalists from across the United States to submit a Phase 2 Application to the EDA. Up to 30 Phase 2 winners could receive $25 to $75 million to implement projects in support of industry cluster development. The Coalition submitted its Phase 2 application on March 15, 2022. Award announcements are expected in September 2022. The Coalition is comprised of eight public and non-profit members located in the Louisville, KY region: The Louisville Healthcare CEO Council; Louisville Metro Government, the Kentuckiana Regional Planning and Development Agency (KIPDA); the Louisville Urban League; Metro United Way; AMPED; Greater Louisville Inc., and the University of Louisville. The Coalition is using its collective human, financial, and material resources to establish the Louisville region as a nationally competitive hub for Digital Health and AI through six Component Projects, including the NuLu Station Tech Innovation Center. NuLu Station will anchor the eastern side of the Coalition’s proposed Innovation Corridor, which will run from NuLu to Russell, with a transit loop down Main and Market Streets. NuLu Station will stimulate innovation in the digital health and AI sector by hosting a coordinated stack of workforce and business development programs to merge learning, creativity and entrepreneurship and to stimulate a more robust and equitable healthcare cluster. Examples of similar spaces in other cities include Cortex in St. Louis, the Ion in Houston, 1819 in Cincinnati, and (programmatically) the OHUB in Atlanta. Louisville Metro Government is seeking proposals, on behalf of the Coalition for an entity (Developer) to develop, build, or locate NuLu Station in walking distance proximity to Louisville’s emerging economic and cultural innovation assets including, but not limited to, tech-oriented start-up companies, healthcare corporate headquarters, the University of Louisville Health Science Campus, existing co-working spaces, and a variety of retail shops and restaurants.
