Specifications include, but are not limited to: The State of Vermont is seeking a professional or organization that can provide a simple, non -traditional scoping study for the state’s historic scu lpture collection, Sculpture on t he Highway . This interagency initiative (BGS, VTrans, and ACCD) is working to re-establish public access and conserve monumental public sculptures of Vermont marble and reinforced concrete along nearly 400 miles of Vermont Interstat e. Recognized as the only statewide Interstate sculpture park in the United States , this collection is now part of the Vermont State Art Collection, and in the care of the BGS’ Vermont State Curator’s Office. This scoping study is funded in part by the Federal Highway Administration and BGS, through the Vermont Agency of Transportation (VT rans) Municipal Assistance Program (MAP). Many of these sculptures have been languishing for years at abandoned sites and must be relocated to new sites at open Interstate rest areas and pull offs, in coordination with VTrans and FHWA. Several other sculptures that are part of this collection known as Sculpture on the Highway, will remain at their current open Interstate sites in Waterbury (I89 N&S), St. Albans (I89N), Putney (I91S), and Randolph (I89S), but have deteriorated due in part to missing or inadequate foundations that must be rehabilitated and/or constructed. This work will keep the sculptures within the existing Interstate right of way--as originally intended-- allowing continued, and in many cases, reestablished public access while also significantly improving ongoing maintenance and stewardship of this nationally significant collection of art.
