Specifications include, but are not limited to: National Register nomination of an archaeological site; 2.2.1 Preparation – The Consultant will perform research to review existing records pertaining to 39HD0115, possibly including a research trip to the Archaeological Research Center in Rapid City to view existing records pertaining to the site and the faunal materials excavated from the site. The Consultant also should be familiar with the Bison Kill Sites in South Dakota, 9000 B.C. – A.D. 1875 Multiple Property Documentation Form and with previous research on bison kill sites in South Dakota and the Great Plains in general. The Consultant also will be responsible for coordinating with the private landowner and the land managers concerning scheduling of fieldwork and access to the property. The State will provide the contact information for the landowner and the land managers upon award of the contract. 2.2.2 Fieldwork – The Consultant will be required to conduct archaeological fieldwork at 39HD0115. At a minimum, the Consultant will be required to conduct a close-interval pedestrian field survey of the current site boundary and the surrounding area to identify any additional diagnostic artifacts, to map the features of the site (including the bone bed, any associated drive lines or catchment areas, etc.), and to photograph the site. Maps produced and photographs obtained will be an essential component of the National Register Nomination form. Excavation, in the form of judiciously placed and fully documented shovel tests or excavation units, will likely be necessary to define the limits of the bone bed and/or to better define the site boundary.
