Outpatient mental and behavioral health treatment provided in schools should be based on the following principles: Services should keep students in their classrooms and in the school district whenever possible; Services should be proactive and positive, building on the strengths of the student; Service delivery should be well integrated into the school setting, making treatment providers and school staff partners in creating a healthy environment for all children; Service providers should evidence strong alliances and experience in collaborating with schools; Services must follow the mandate to be least intrusive, least restrictive and responsive to the individual needs of the child within the school setting; Services should be child centered and family focused.
