Specifications include, but are not limited to: The Little Book of Profiling1 (The Little Book) is an essential resource to educate highway agency staff, highway researchers, profiling equipment manufacturers, highway construction contractors, and consultants on the principles of road roughness measurement, use of measurement equipment, and application of roughness data. The Little Book was created more than 22 years ago and needs an update covering the hardware and software advancements that have occurred since it was published. Certification protocols have advanced along with the development of a benchmark profiler and reference quality profilers. Through pooled fund studies, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and the South Dakota Department of Transportation (SDDOT) have supported ongoing development of ProVAL software, which industry uses daily to view and analyze profiles. ProVAL is required by numerous agencies for construction quality control and quality assurance as well as certification by cross-correlation methodologies. Other research has been conducted to improve profile measurement and analysis over a wider range of conditions such as urban and low-speed environments.
