Specifications include, but are not limited to: The Marine Science Consortium was founded in 1968 by three (3) Pennsylvania state colleges as The Marine Science Consortium of Pennsylvania State Colleges and Universities. The program is known and runs as The Chincoteague Bay Field Station (CBFS) and offers a comprehensive, handson, field-oriented Marine Science program. The station and program is located adjacent to Chincoteague Bay and the National Wildlife Refuge on Assateague Island, VA. CBFS provides interdisciplinary educational and research opportunities which expand from the bay to the Atlantic Ocean. Institutions and public support fund the CBFS as well as founding institutions who have academic programs directly related to the marine science programs participate via membership. Kutztown University (a founding member) has a Marine Science major and field experience is one of the most critical teaching aspects in Marine Science program at Kutztown and is integral to all courses taught at the CBFS. CBFS is the only know center on the east coast to offer this unique experience, its location is relatively close to the university to support their educational programs, the direct relationship the university has with the CBFS, it is for these reasons that only a single contract can provide the services.
