This Specification outlines the requirements to furnish and deliver 115-pound RE steel rail (Section 115RE, 115 lb. per yard) for use in Pittsburgh Regional Transit’s (PRT’s) railway track complete as specified herein. Rail shall be new and shall conform to American Railway Engineering and Maintenance-Of-Way Association (AREMA) “Specifications for Steel Rail”, latest revision. Specifications include, but are not limited to: 2.1 All rail shall be Section 115RE straight rail, 39'-0" in length, 115 lbs. per yard, and furnished in quantities as shown on the Proposal Form. Type of rail shall be as follows: 2.1.1 Head-hardened rail with both ends blank. 2.2 Hardness of head-hardened rail shall be a minimum of 370 Brinell Hardness (BHN) at 3/8” below the head surface. A Brinell Hardness test (utilizing a tungsten carbide indenter) shall be performed on one of the following: • A piece of rail at least 6” long cut from a rail of each heat of steel or each heat treatment lot. • A ground milled transverse sample cut from the 6” piece above. • Equivalent samples in each tempering charge, which shall be full rail sections from the same heat as the rail being treated and shall be at least 6” in length. 2.3 Following final heat treatment, the rails shall be conditioned by straightening to comply with the finished requirements of AREMA, “Specification for Steel Rail”, latest revision. 2.4 Head hardened rail shall be marked with a 2" wide white and orange stripe that shall be painted on both sides of the web and around the railhead at a point approximately 3' from each end of the rail. 2.5 Rail shall be furnished to PRT in straight sections. Rail shall be cut square and clean in accordance with AREMA, “Specification for Steel Rail”, latest revision.
