Specifications include, but are not limited to: Maker education and makerspaces have gained traction in every type of school, from colleges and universities to public, independent, and charter K12 schools across our region. In the Spring of 2020, SMSP will engage a cohort of approximately 30 educators from our partnering K-12 schools and districts who have established or are establishing a makerspace (and/or has a desire to bring Maker Education to their campuses), to support them in learning how to implement this new way of teaching and learning so that it meets its fullest potential. The lead contractor will design and facilitate a series of workshops and coaching experiences for participants that are responsive to the needs of the group, as they pertain to 1) the visioning, design, and equitable utilization of new makerspaces, and 2) best practices and pedagogical supports needed to help instructors in school-based makerspaces maximize the impact of maker-based learning to enhance standards-based instruction. This series of discussions and workshops will empower participants to build school cultures around maker-based education that incorporates the values and skills engendered by maker-based education, addresses established learning targets and curricula, and actively ensures equity of access to all learners.
