The initial scope of work for the historic preservation and interpretation plan is generally as follows. The final scope of work will be determined in consultation with the selected project team. Historic Preservation/Interpretation Plan Scope: A. Executive Summary/Introduction: Provide an overview of the purpose of the plan and the history of McKenzie Hall. B. Historical context/interpretation (student supported; coordinate with UO on student assignments) 1. Life of Architect DeNorval Unthank, Jr. 2. Education: First Black graduate of UO School of Architecture 3. Career: Working in Oregon in the 1960’s and becoming a partner at an architecture firm 4. UO faculty teaching experience 5. McKenzie Hall’s original design and renovation work 6. Prior and subsequent work (McKenzie Hall is an earlier work); McKenzie Hall original design and influences on future work of the architect, significance, and role 7. If available, review early sketches of McKenzie Hall to show Architect’s design process 8. Locate McKenzie Hall within broader architectural work of the era and region 9. Incorporate existing interviews with relatives/living colleagues (UO to provide) C. Historic preservation assessment: McKenzie Hall 1. Significance i. Historical background ii. Historical significance 2. Description of structure i. Construction chronology ii. Character-defining features; unique architectural features and materials 3. Preliminary conditions assessment i. Current condition and integrity of the structure ii. Identifying damage or deterioration 4. Treatment recommendations & implementation plan i. Conservation and preservation of the structure ii. Necessary repairs or restoration work 1. Interior 2. Exterior 5. Appendix: Additional information i. Photographs ii. Maps iii. Historical documents D. Historic interpretive exhibit: Content and location/s 1. Provide content for an interpretive exhibit (TBD) to be located within McKenzie Hall (working with Campus Planning, receive feedback from the Museum of Natural and Cultural History) 2. Recommend 2-3 appropriate locations for the interpretive exhibit within the building
