These standards include: Opening force: Interior doors should require no more than five pounds of force to open. Closing speed: Doors should take at least five seconds to close from 90 degrees to 12 degrees. Mounting height: Door closers should be mounted at least 78 inches from the floor. Opening degree: Doors should open at least 90 degrees. The ADA also requires maneuvering clearances around doors to be free of protrusion and changes in level. Additional ADA door requirements: The push side of a door should have a smooth surface at the bottom to allow wheelchair users to open the door with their feet. Door hardware should be operable with one hand and without tight grasping, pinching, or twisting. Door handles should be operable with a single hand and without tight grasping, pinching, or twisting. ADA compliance for doors includes ensuring that doors are wide enough, have low thresholds, and have operable hardware. Width Doors should have a clear width of at least 32 inches when open to 90 degrees For double doors, the minimum clear width is 48 inches when one leaf is inactive and 60 inches when both leaves are active Thresholds Thresholds should be no higher than 1/2 inch at accessible doors Existing doors can have thresholds up to 3/4 inch if beveled on each side with a slope not steeper than 1:2 Hardware Door hardware should require 5 lbs. or less force to open and close Door hardware should be operable with one hand and without tight grasping Lever handles and U-shaped pulls are examples of hardware that comply with these requirements Maneuvering space There should be a clear space of at least 30 inches by 48 inches in front of doors Doors should be designed and installed to provide adequate swing clearance Closing speed Doors should have a closing speed of 5 seconds at a minimum Door viewers Door viewers installed at ADA height sit 48″ from the bottom of the slab. The Contractor must identify the power sources to install the door opener mechanism. Electrical work shall comply with the Ohio electrical codes.
