January • Continue winter clean up and remove remaining leaves from perennial beds • Check trees and shrubs for winter damage and prune accordingly (refer. ANSI A300) February • If specified in the contract, apply fertilizer around trees and shrubs in late February. Fertilization should be based on soil samples. Refer to the local County extension office for local information. Fertilize trees and shrubs. Fertilize ornamental, fruit, and nut trees and shrubs. • Finish pruning shade trees, summer flowering shrubs, and hedges. Spring blooming shrubs may be pruned immediately after flowering. (refer. ANSI A300) • Replacement trees and shrubs should be planted in February or early March. • Mow all turf areas if grass has exceeded the maintenance height.
