The area of mining disturbance is an abandoned surface mine that was in operation around March of 1968. Lawrence King Coal Company, the site operator, mined the Meigs Creek #9 Coal seam under permit A-186. The pre-SMCRA activities led to unreclaimed highwalls in close proximity to Bethlehem Road; a county road situated along the ridgetop used to travel to Ruraldale. The property is undeveloped and consists of wooded terrain, highwalls, and spoil piles. These highwalls and spoils are a result of unreclaimed/prelaw mining practices.
