The Municipal Building located at 100 Court Plaza in downtown Asheville is the headquarters of the Asheville Police and Fire Departments, and home to Fire Station 1. The fire station’s 3-bay apparatus bay is on an elevated slab. Structural assessments have determined that the slab is compromised and needs to be fully removed and replaced. The slab replacement will require the partial demolition and reconstruction of the spaces below the slab; the renovation of a new office for Police Forensics–currently located in the construction zone–to another area of the building; and the renovation of a leased office space for a temporary gym. The project also includes two bid alternates: 1) the replacement of the boiler; and 2) the restoration of the building envelope. During construction the building will remain occupied. The Police Department will maintain their operations in the building. Fire Station 1 will continue to operate one company out of the building, but will move the apparatus to the rear of the building outside the construction zone.
