This is required to keep unacceptable content out of the workplace environment as well as counter the many risks of hacking on the Internet. The service runs off premises in multiple redundant datacenters for reliability. It scans many types of encrypted ("https") content as well as plain text websites, to improve the capture of malicious software. If this subscription is not renewed, ITS will be lacking means to secure web browsing, much of which is essential to conducting daily business. Without filtering, larger numbers of desktop computers would likely become compromised by hacking, potentially leading to huge losses for the business, in addition to lawsuits for inappropriate content in the workplace.
