The City of Auburn Office of Planning and Economic Development (OPED) is responsible for the physical and long-range planning and community development that occur within the City. The office is involved in a variety of issues including housing, human services, public infrastructure, neighborhood stabilization, comprehensive planning, zoning, downtown revitalization, brownfield redevelopment, and historic preservation. The City is an entitlement community and receives Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) from the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). The Community Development Block Grant is authorized under the Housing and Community Development Act of 1974. The purpose of the CDBG program is to develop viable urban communities by providing low to moderate income persons decent housing, suitable living environment and expanded economic opportunities, as well as improving parks, playgrounds, and public facilities. The City of Auburn is completing its final year of the 2020-2024 Five Year Consolidated Plan. The 2025-2029 Five Year Consolidated Plan will be worked on this fall and winter. It will take into account the findings of the 2025-2029 Analysis of Impediments. The City of Auburn OPED is the lead for the City’s CDBG funded projects and will be responsible for all aspects of the CDBG program administration, including fiscal oversight, managing consultants, engaging the community outreach process and completion of the CDBG improvements.
