Summary of Specifications:
The County of Rockland (the “County”), through the County Executive’s initiative, has established a goal to strengthen the County’s economy and transform Rockland County’s neighborhoods by providing wireless Internet access throughout the County. The County of Rockland intends to facilitate the development of a privately owned and operated digital infrastructure for open-air Internet access and to help citizens, businesses, schools, and community organizations make effective use of wireless technology to achieve their goals while providing a greater experience for visitors to the County. The Countywide WI-FI Network would be part of a strategy of the County of Rockland to support and expand state-of the-art communications technology for citizens, government agencies, and Rockland businesses. This initiative resulted from interest shown by our local business community. One of the suggested recommendations was for the County to support the continued expansion of state-of-the-art communications technology for Rockland businesses. The intent of the Countywide WI-FI Network is to promote the deployment of a scaleable System that provides broadband wireless services to government agencies, institutional users, businesses, citizens and travelers at affordable prices while enabling development and deployment of new usage models (e.g. portable, nomadic and mobile) and applications. This strategy further calls for a standards-based, Open Service Provider Network. The execution of this strategy is expected to open job opportunities through investment in telecommunications infrastructure, provide the Rockland County region with greater broadband access to the Internet, and allow Rockland to remain on the forefront of deployment and adoption of new technologies.
