Specifications include, but are not limited to: The specification covers sodium chloride, obtained from natural deposits (rock salt) or produced by man (evaporated, solar, other) for use during road snow and ice removal operations. 1. Chemical Composition: Rock salt furnished shall be composed of a minimum of 95.0 percent Sodium Chloride (NACL). 2. Gradation: All rock salt shall comply with the following gradation requirements: SIEVE SIZE PERCENT PASSING (BY WEIGHT) ______ _______________________________ 1/2 100 3/8 95-100 No. 4 20-90 No. 8 10-60 No. 30 0-15 3. Condition: Salt furnished shall be free-flowing and granular. All bulk salt shall be treated with an approved conditioner, such as sodium Ferro cyanide, to prevent caking while in storage. This treatment shall be prior to shipping product from the origin (natural deposits/artificially produced). This conditioner shall be visible and introduced uniformly throughout the salt at a maximum rate of 50 parts per million or 0.0050 percent. The sodium chloride shall arrive at the delivery point in a free-flowing and usable condition. 4. Moisture The moisture content of all rock salt at the delivery point shall be relatively dry with a minimum moisture content of two & one-half percent (2.5%). 5. Foreign Material Sodium chloride shall be relatively free from any foreign material at the delivery point, Residue from truck beds such as coke, grain, or other materials not germane to sodium chloride will be a cause for rejection. Any oversize foreign material will result in immediate rejection. 6. Basis of Acceptance Rock salt furnished will be accepted on the basis of the producer certifying, in writing, the salt will be in compliance with the specifications for the duration of the contract period. The Letter of Certification must be furnished within seven (7) day of notification of award. The Certification must be on the producer’s letterhead, signed by the producer’s representative and display the seal and signature of a Notary Public. 7. Random Sampling Random sampling and testing of material shall be done by Santa Fe County Public Works Department in accordance with ASTM D632. Random sampling of sodium content shall be based on representative samples obtained from loads delivered to Santa Fe County and each load shall be identified by the delivery shipping number.
